Sydney Harbour Bridge
The Sydney Harbour Bridge is certainly one of the main tourist Sydney attractions and one of the symbols of the city. Its inauguration took place in 1932 after more than eight years in construction. Also known as “coathanger,” it is characterized by the highest arch bridge in the world.
With about 1200 meters long and 49 meters wide it is the widest bridge in the world until the construction of the Port Mann bridge in Vancouver. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the largest steel bridge in the world, but unfortunately it is not the longest.
Some interesting facts about the bridge:
During the early years, it cost 6 pences cross the bridge if you were driving a car. Currently, the price is 3.30 AUD.
The 4 pillars on both sides are entirely decorative.
The bridge height increases or falls due to temperature change about 18cm.
The bridge contains 6 million rivets. The largest of these with dimensions of 40 cm and 3.5 kg.
Queen Victoria Building (QVB)
The Queen Victoria Building is a shopping mall built in the late nineteenth century in the business district of Sydney. Designed as a market and used for many other purposes, in the late twentieth century it underwent an extensive restoration and remodeling after which the building returned to its original use.
Located between the streets George, Market, York and Druitt, the Queen Victoria Building stands with its marked Romanesque style, 30 meters wide and 190 meters long.
One of the peculiarities of the building, at least for me, is its tremendous resemblance with the department store “Harrods” in London.
Darling Harbour is a port located in the west part of the central business district of Sydney. It is a large recreational port where pedestrians and visitors can spend a pleasant day full of activities.
The port is named after the former governor of New South Wales, Lieutenant-General Ralph Darling. Initially its name was Long Cove; however the governor decided to change the title of the place and name under the his name.
Among many activities that you can enjoy in the port, I must highlight Sea Life, Wild Life, the Madame Tussauds or IMAX theaters that have the largest cinema screen in the world.
The best beach I have ever been. Incredible. One of the must Sydney attractions.
